Why Are Young People

Choosing Not to Have Children

The Village

“It takes a village to raise a child” is a phrase commonly spoken in societies with tight-knit communities. Its interpretation is pretty clear that raising a child is a communal effort. The responsibility of looking after the child does not solely fall on the shoulders of parents in such communities. Everyone comes together to play their part and ensure that parents don’t become overwhelmed because of parenting.

In today’s world, “the village” doesn’t exist anymore. Although there are various countries where you can still find regions with people living in tight-knit communities, and everyone helping each other out with everything. However, the reality of the modern world is pretty bleak as it focuses on individualism more than society as a whole.

The capitalistic nature of the world means that people have to see each other as competitors. They are made to feel that it’s every man for himself, and those who wish to get ahead must focus on themselves alone. Bringing up children in such a world becomes much more difficult than it used to be.

The absence of the village not only tires out the parents but also deprives children of the opportunity to learn diverse perspectives and enhanced social skills. Young people understand that if they were to have children, they would not only have to do everything by themselves, but their children would also have to grow up isolated.

Affordability

Young adults who grew up living in houses bought by their parents had a rude awakening when they stepped out into the world. Owning a house in today’s world has become next to impossible. Rent alone is a huge financial burden on people. Census revealed that nearly half of US citizens spend over 30% of their income on rent. Many can’t afford to even rent and live in shared apartments to reduce the burden on their finances.

The overall cost of living has also increased drastically in the past couple of decades. The financial situation is bleak for young adults all over the world. It is also one of the reasons why young adults are choosing not to have children.

According to the Pew Research Center, 36% of people under 50 said they decided not to have children because they can’t afford to raise one. Young people have also realised that just like the cost of living increased drastically from the time of their parents, it will be the same for their children.

Bringing children into this world only to leave them behind with financial insecurity doesn’t sound like a moral choice to make.

Environmental Changes

The young people of today are the most conscious about environmental issues as compared to previous generations. They pick eco-friendly options when they are shopping. They also make more conscious choices every day to keep their environment safe and clean. However, the efforts of young people can only do so much when corporations continue to make decisions that actively harm the environment.

Environmental issues aren’t limited to climate change and affect every aspect of our daily lives. In January 2026, the UN announced that we had entered an era of global water bankruptcy. The UN’s report also revealed that nearly 4 billion people face severe water scarcity for at least a month every year.

While those living in developed countries haven’t had to face this problem yet, it is only a matter of time. The warnings from scientists have made it clear that the future is only going to get worse. In such a world, living is quite difficult on its own, and young people are not hopeful about their future.

Children brought into this world will be doomed from the start, and young adults understand this fully. Concerns about the state of the world is the third leading reason behind people under 50 not having children.

Family Situations

People who have had a bad experience with their own families end up developing a negative overview of the institution of family as a whole. Some young adults also consider themselves unfit to be parents because of their relationship with their own parents.

It is difficult to overcome the patterns of abuse and even more so to avoid repeating the same patterns with your own children. Many young adults work through these issues in therapy. However, working to improve their mental health is one thing, and deciding to have children is another.

Young people take a great deal of care when making important decisions like having children. They understand the value of therapy and utilize it to improve their mental well-being. They also understand that they don’t have to bring children into the world just to set a better example of parenting for their parents.

The Freedom to Choose

The option to choose between having and not having children is a huge blessing for both parents and children. People who had to have children in the past, even when they didn’t want to, often ended up becoming neglectful and emotionally unavailable parents. Unwanted children grow up having a lot of resentment in their hearts for their family and the world as a whole.

The freedom to choose keeps people from making bad decisions and ensures that children grow up in homes full of love. It has also reduced the burden on women who had to have children just because it was expected of them. The women of today don’t have to lose themselves to motherhood and can focus on their future before deciding on having children.

The Way Ahead

Young people had to learn pretty quickly to adapt to the rapidly changing world. From the popularity of social media to the introduction of AI, everything has made people feel more and more alone. With the threat of climate change looming overhead, it makes sense for young adults to choose not to have children.

The survival of our social framework depends on letting people choose for themselves while also providing them with community so they never feel like they have to get through everything by themselves. However, a lot will have to change in the world to make it more suitable for its people.
