Why Schools Are Designed To Produce Compliance, Not Curiosity, And How They Can Find The Balance
Children are curious by nature. According to the Information Gap Theory by psychologist George Leowenstein, curiosity is a physical and psychological response to a recognized discrepancy between what we currently know and what we want to know. Experts view childhood curiosity as the most important emotion children experience. It is not something that is transitional but rather a force that stays and evolves with us as we grow older.
Now, when children learn something through curiosity, they tend to remember it by associating it with an accomplishment. So, for example, when a child throws a ball on the floor, and it makes a sound, and it bounces back, the child learns that it’s going to happen again, and that’s why whenever he finds a ball next time, he’s definitely going to throw it back, wait for the sound and the bouncing back. Children apply the same analytical lens to everything they can’t understand and only reach conclusions when they have the answer. However, conventional school systems are built on a very different model.
Why are Schools Focused on Systemized Learning?
Early childhood education is mostly designed to help children learn by understanding their surroundings, exploration, self-help, and socialization. But that changes drastically once they transition to older years. Discipline, curriculum, and pre-selected activities become mandatory, and that’s when children shift to a phase that no longer satisfies their curiosity. Schools design their curriculum and education system with one goal in mind: preparing students for the next year’s course and then the next, and so on and on and on, until they reach college and get into professional lives.
Is Compliance Really THAT Bad for Children?
In terms of preparing students for their future, schools are just doing what they are supposed to do. But the impact it can have on a child’s mind may not always be positive. Critical thinking, creative freedom, and exploratory senses play a huge role in cognitive abilities. When the subject choice is limited, children feel restricted. Similarly, when the rules are predefined, questioning them is harder. So where should they draw the line? How do they make children more inquisitive within their compliant structure?
Fortunately, there are ways to do that. But the foundation must be laid from an early age.
Do NOT Limit their Imagination with Boundaries
A while back, I went to visit a family friend with my dad. His little boy was around 5 or 6. He came to us and asked if we would like to see what he was playing with. The spark in his eyes was magical, and we couldn’t refuse. He went to his playroom and came back with blocks of Jenga. Now, the important part, this boy is the youngest among his siblings and cousins, and of course, he couldn’t make a perfect Jenga tower even if he tried to. So he told us that this is how the sisters and the big brother play with these blocks; he even tried to pull out a few, like he saw them doing.
When he realized he couldn’t create that tower, he started arranging the blocks in a different way, and after a minute, he said, look it’s a bed. He even made one side higher to make the blocks look exactly like the bed. I was impressed. He went on and rearranged the blocks to mimic every shape he saw in the room, the door, the cupboard, the sofa; it was phenomenal. His imagination wasn’t limited by the rules of a game, and that’s how he thought of creating structures that could be created with those blocks. In his mind, there were endless possibilities.
This is what we need to give kids at a very young age. For example, we don’t teach young kids addition on paper, by drawing lines and counting them; instead, we ask them to look around, find their favorite similar things, and start counting them, could be their color pencils, leaves, or even candies. This simple exercise not only makes it easier for children to count but also plants a seed in their young minds that counting is merely putting one thing after another, and so on and on and on.
Keep Their Exploratory Senses Active Throughout
From exercises of discovering textures and smells to figuring out how flowers bloom and water freezes into ice cubes, every child learns one fundamental lesson: there’s something new to discover every day. That’s the gift of keeping exploratory senses alive, and it is one of the most powerful things a parent or teacher can do for a child’s developing mind.
Think about what happens when a child picks up a pinecone on a walk, and you stop to look at it with them instead of hurrying past. They notice the way the scales are layered. They wonder why some are open, and some are closed. They ask questions you may not even know the answers to. In that one small moment, they are practicing observation, forming hypotheses, and experiencing the satisfaction of genuine inquiry. No worksheet was created. Curiosity did.
The challenge is that as children get older, these exploratory moments become rarer. School schedules fill up. Structured activities replace open-ended play. The pinecone on the ground becomes something to step over rather than something to wonder about. And slowly, without anyone intending it, the world becomes smaller for them.
This is why keeping exploratory senses active cannot be left to chance. It has to be something we consciously protect.
One simple way to do this at home is to leave problems unsolved on purpose. Instead of explaining why the sky changes color at sunset, ask your child what they think is happening. Let them sit without knowing for a little while. Resist the urge to Google it immediately. Uncertainty is not a problem to be solved as quickly as possible. It is the very engine of curiosity. A child who learns to tolerate not-knowing-yet is a child who will keep asking questions their entire life.
Another approach is to let children lead the learning on topics they are genuinely passionate about. If your daughter is obsessed with horses, let that obsession take her somewhere. Let her research horse anatomy, the history of wild horses, and how different cultures have used horses throughout history. What looks like a hobby from the outside is actually a full education in biology, history, geography, and research skills. Passion-led learning tends to go deeper and stick longer than any curriculum can manufacture.

Give Children the Language to Ask Better Questions
There is something we rarely teach children explicitly, and it matters enormously: how to ask a good question.
Most children know how to ask “What is that?” or “Why does that happen?” But there is a whole world of deeper questioning that opens up when children learn phrases like “I wonder if…” or “What would happen if we changed this part?” or “How is this different from what we saw before?” These are not just conversational habits. They are the building blocks of critical thinking.
You can model this yourself. When you are cooking and you change an ingredient, say out loud, “I wonder if this will make it sweeter or change the texture.” When you are driving, and you take a different route, say, “Let’s see if this road is faster, what do you think?” You are showing your child that thoughtful, curious people ask questions about ordinary things all the time, not just when a teacher asks them to.
Schools that do this well tend to have teachers who are genuinely excited about learning themselves. A teacher who says “that’s a fascinating question, let’s find out together” does something far more valuable than one who always has the answer ready. They normalize curiosity. They make not-knowing feel like the beginning of something rather than an embarrassment.
Let Them Be Bored
This one sounds counterintuitive, but it may be the most underrated gift we can give children in an overscheduled world.
Boredom is not an empty state. It is a creative pressure. When children have nothing handed to them, they are forced to invent. They build forts out of sofa cushions. They write stories about their stuffed animals. They dig in the backyard looking for whatever might be down there. They decide the living room is a spaceship and spend forty minutes figuring out how to launch it.
None of that happens when every moment is filled with a structured activity or a screen.
Research increasingly supports what parents and educators have sensed for a long time: unstructured time is where imagination lives. It is where children develop the ability to self-direct, to tolerate discomfort, and to find their own answers without waiting for someone to provide them. These are not soft skills. They are some of the most valuable capabilities a person can carry into adult life.
The pressure to fill every hour with something productive is understandable. It comes from a genuine desire to give children every advantage. But over-programming a child’s day can quietly teach them that they need external stimulation to function, and that the absence of a plan is a problem rather than an opportunity.
Try leaving one afternoon a week completely unscheduled. Give no suggestions. Resist the instinct to step in when they say they are bored. See what they create.
Where Schools Can Do Better
It would be unfair to place all of this on parents. Schools carry significant responsibility here too, and the good news is that many educators are already thinking about this deeply.
Project-based learning, where students spend extended time working through a real problem or creating something tangible, tends to produce the kind of engaged, curious thinking that traditional testing rarely captures. When a class of ten-year-olds spends a month designing a solution to reduce food waste in their school cafeteria, they are learning math, science, communication, and critical thinking simultaneously. More importantly, they are learning that their ideas can have a real impact. That is a lesson that outlasts any exam.
Inquiry-based classrooms, where teachers start with a question rather than an answer, are another powerful model. Instead of “today we are going to learn about ecosystems,” the lesson begins with “why do you think the lake near our town has more fish on one side than the other?” Suddenly, children are scientists. They have a stake in finding out. The curriculum has not changed, but the relationship the child has with the learning has changed entirely.
The balance the schools are searching for is not between rigor and freedom. It is between structure and space. Children need both. They need the scaffold of organized learning and the room to climb off it and explore on their own.
The Long Game
When we talk about independent learning, we are ultimately talking about what kind of adults we are raising.
A child who was always told exactly what to think, when to think it, and how to demonstrate that thinking grows into an adult who waits to be told what to do next. A child who was asked “what do you think?” and “how would you find out?” grows into someone who knows how to navigate uncertainty, generate ideas, and keep going when there is no roadmap.
The little boy with the Jenga blocks who turned the pieces into a bed, then a door, then a sofa, was not just playing. He was practicing something essential. He hit a constraint, the inability to build the tower his siblings built, and instead of stopping, he looked at the same materials differently and found new possibilities in them. That is not a small thing. That is exactly the kind of thinking the world will need him to have twenty years from now.
Curiosity, as that little boy showed us without trying to, is not something children lose. It is something we either protect or slowly crowd out.
The simplest thing any parent, teacher, or caregiver can do is this: the next time a child asks a question you know the answer to, pause before you give it. Ask them what they think first. Let the wondering happen. That small moment of space is where independent learning begins.
